Prefab holding on?

After the recent closure of local prefab manufacturer Transform LLC, whom we had worked with closely on our modular design competition, as well as prominent Michelle Kaufmann (SF)  and Marmol + Radziner (LA), we had become weary that prefab was stumbling in this tight financing economy. It seems that the closure of factory partners due to lack of financing has been driving down supply even though demand likely still exists.

Today, though, its good to see news that Michelle Kaufmann may be back at it. Michelle was one of the first innovators in the prefab world, design both the Glidehouse and the Breezehouse with sunset magazine after house hunting left her feeling like there must be a better alternative.

From the Architect’s Newspaper, this is a great interview on what Michelle thinks it will take to move prefab forward in this economy (namely bulk and new technologies). We can’t wait to see how her new partnership will emerge.
